Waste Disposal & Sludge Removal

Sludge, bilge and garbage coordinated with licensed contractors and authorized facilities.

A waste reception craft alongside a merchant ship

Waste handling is part of a port call, not an afterthought at the gangway. Sludge, bilge water and garbage each follow different routes, different contractors and different papers. VERKAN MARITIME coordinates disposal with licensed contractors and authorized reception facilities, with applicable MARPOL and port requirements in view. The company coordinates the operation and works only with appropriately licensed contractors and authorized reception facilities.

A clean operation starts with an accurate description. “Some sludge” is not a quantity, and “garbage” is not a category. Oily residues, plastics, food waste, domestic garbage, cargo residues and operational waste can require different reception. Mixing them to save a boat trip creates a problem for the facility and a record the ship cannot defend later. The desk agrees the category, the estimated quantity, the collection window and the documents before anyone is sent to the ship.

What is coordinated

Sludge and oily bilge are arranged with a reception facility permitted to take them, using craft or road transport suited to the berth or anchorage. The ship is told what connection, pumping rate and notice the contractor expects, so the engine room can prepare. Garbage collection is arranged by the categories the port accepts, with enough capacity for the amount the Chief Officer or Master has declared. If a category cannot be taken at that call, the desk says so before the bags are landed, and the ship keeps them on board under its own plan.

Documentation is part of the service, not a courtesy. Receipts, certificates or the port’s required forms are collected and passed to the vessel and, when asked, to the operator. Quantities on the paper should match what was pumped or landed. If a meter, a sounding or a tally differs from the request, the difference is written down at the time. Environmental responsibility here is also operational discipline: the ship can show an inspector what left the vessel, when, and to whom.

  • Category, estimated quantity and collection window agreed first
  • Licensed contractors and authorized facilities only
  • MARPOL and local port requirements checked for the specific call
  • Receipts or certificates returned for the vessel’s records

How a collection is planned

Send the vessel name, berth or anchorage, ETA, the waste types, the estimated quantities and the tank or store location on board. Mention any restriction: a cargo operation that blocks the offshore side, a night-only pumping window, or a draft that limits the reception craft. VERKAN confirms which facility can receive the waste inside the port stay and offers a slot. The ship’s duty officer is included in the timing so hoses, lighting and a responsible person are ready. Pumping or landing starts only when both sides agree the connection is correct.

If the vessel’s departure is advanced, the desk tells the ship whether the original quantity can still be taken or whether a reduced collection is the honest option. A partial collection is recorded as partial. It is not described as a full discharge to make a departure report look tidy. After the operation, the certificate or receipt is checked for vessel name, date, waste type and quantity, and sent to the ship before she sails whenever the facility issues it that quickly. Where the paper follows later, the desk tracks it and forwards it rather than leaving the Master to chase a contractor from the next port.

The ship’s part of the record

The Oil Record Book, Garbage Record Book and any port notification remain the ship’s documents. VERKAN supplies the shore evidence those books rely on. The Master decides what is entered. If a requested method would not meet the rules for that waste at that port, the desk will not arrange it and will say why. Operators who want a single thread for sludge, garbage and the rest of the husbandry can combine this request with provisions, spares or a launch movement, so the boats and the berth window are planned together.

Share the waste category, the estimated quantity and the vessel’s window with the Singapore desk. The team will confirm the facility, the slot and the papers you should expect to receive.
