Medical & Emergency Support

Appointments, emergency coordination and repatriation support for seafarer health and welfare.

A ship's medical locker arranged for crew care

Seafarer medical care sits on a short clock and a long chain of people. A crew member may need a routine check, a dental visit, a specialist review, or immediate help after an injury or illness. VERKAN MARITIME coordinates appointments, emergency shore support and repatriation arrangements so the Master is not left searching for a clinic while also running the ship. The company is a coordinator. It does not replace a hospital, a port doctor or the local emergency number.

For an immediate emergency, the local emergency service comes first, and the vessel’s agent or operator should be notified at the same time. Call the VERKAN desk as well so transport, a receiving facility and the next of kin process can be lined up behind that first response. Routine and urgent-but-stable cases can be planned: a clinic time, a vehicle, an escort if the seafarer does not know the city, and a way back to the ship or to a hotel if the seafarer is not fit to sail.

What can be coordinated

Planned care includes medical and dental appointments, follow-up visits and the certificates a flag or a company doctor has asked for, where a local clinic can issue them. The desk confirms what the clinic needs before the seafarer leaves the ship: passport, discharge book if requested, a description of symptoms from the Master, and any medication list. Transport is arranged so the appointment is reachable inside the port stay, and the ship is told the expected return time.

Emergency coordination covers the shore arrangements that follow a casualty: which facility has accepted the seafarer, who is the contact there, and how the Master gets updates without calling a public ward repeatedly. If the seafarer will not rejoin, repatriation planning begins with fitness to travel, an escort if one is required, tickets, and the documents the airline and the immigration desk will ask to see. Personal effects left on board are listed and moved only on written instruction. None of this replaces the owner’s P&I contact or the company’s medical provider. VERKAN keeps the local movements aligned with whatever those offices decide.

  • Clinic and dental appointments inside the vessel’s window
  • Transport and a shore contact for the seafarer
  • Status updates the Master can pass to the operator
  • Repatriation logistics once a doctor says the seafarer may travel

How a case is handled

A planned request should name the vessel, the port, the seafarer’s rank, the nature of the appointment in ordinary language, and the latest time he or she must be back on board. Clinical detail can be shared with the clinic directly when privacy requires it; the logistics desk needs enough to book the right kind of visit and the right vehicle. VERKAN proposes a time, confirms it with the ship, and sends the address and the driver’s instructions in one message. After the visit, the seafarer returns with whatever papers the clinic has given, and the desk reports only the logistical outcome: attended, referred, or unfit to return.

An emergency request should state where the seafarer is, whether local emergency services have already been called, and a phone that answers on the ship. The desk then works the shore side: receiving facility, transport if the emergency service is not carrying the patient, and a single updater for the operator. Speculation about diagnosis is avoided. The medical people speak for the medical facts. If hospitalisation continues past sailing, the desk helps with relief crew logistics by linking to the crew-change service, and with a hotel or escort plan if the seafarer is discharged before a flight home exists.

Privacy and the limit of the role

Health information is shared only with the people who need it to move the seafarer safely: the clinic, the Master, and the operator’s named contact. It is not copied into a wide agency thread. Costs and guarantees follow the operator’s instruction and the facility’s rules. VERKAN will not promise a particular medical outcome, a same-hour bed, or a certificate a doctor has not agreed to sign.

For a planned appointment, send the vessel, the port and the kind of care required. For an emergency already in progress, contact local emergency services first, then the agent or operator, then the Singapore desk on so the shore arrangements can start.
